RFU Counties 2 Herts/Middlesex
Tabard RFC 24-35 Hendon RFC
Creative play by Hendon seals a bonus point away victory.
Tabard pushed Hendon back in the opening 10 minutes but the defence held strong. Backrow forward Jamie Connolly created the first score, breaking from a maul on the Hendon 10 metre line and opening up the Tabard backline to put centre Dragos Ciocan through to score a Cian Hynes converted try 0-7.
Minutes later scrum half Rich Roberts set up Ciocan again, on a blind side run from half-way to slice through the defence to score his second try converted by Hynes for a 0-14 lead.
Tabard then started to put the Hendon defence at full stretch with Rossa Dooley excelling, to frustrate the home outfit. However, a penalty kick to touch from Tabard after 25 minutes set up a rolling maul from the Hendon 22 to score as Hendon were reduced to 14 players after a series of penalties resulted in a yellow card.
Into the second period, now with the light wind on their backs, Hendon pushed into the Tabard 22, creating space for an overlap from a Roberts dummy right to pass left to feed JT Moncher on the left wing to score with Hynes converting from out wide as Hendon crept into a 5-21 lead on 55 minutes.
Tabard forwards were again stopped by Hendon defence with Chris Kiyingi securing from several mauls to push Hendon out from defence. On 20 minutes a Hendon loose ball was collected by a Tabard centre to crash his way through a retreating defence to score another unconverted try 10-21.
Minutes later a mistake from a Tabard defensive pass saw Hendon’s Robbie Burrell collect over the goal line to score an opportunist try converted by Hynes to stretch Hendon’s advantage to 10-28.
On 70 minutes an up and under from defence by Roberts set up a maul on the Tabard 10 metre line, winger Faz Fiaz stepped several defenders to score his debut try, converted by Hynes to complete a 100% kicking day 10-35.
To Tabards credit, they scored two late tries, the first coming as Hendon’s defence stopped for a forward pass with the referee un-sighted and the second in last play for a respectable 24 points to 35 result.
This Saturday 1st October Hendon return to Copthall for a home encounter against Harrow RFC with a 3pm kick off.
