Hendon RFC 11 - 6 UCS Old Boys
On Saturday, whilst the clubhouse could not be open for bar service or showers, a good crowd of spectators were still able to enjoy a socially distanced drink outside on the patio, with table service and a big screen tv to watch the European Cup Final after seeing Hendon march on unbeaten in this League.
Hendon entertained UCS Old Boys at Copthall on Saturday, with the home side having more than enough players for two squads. UCS however only fielded enough players for one team and so two Hendon teams and UCS played a round robin.
In the first match, Hendon 1sts were surprised by some of the inventiveness of UCS's plays and pace but came through to win by six tries to five. Hendon 1sts and 2nds then played a 'friendly' against each other and the 2nds also showed real pace which had their opponents needing to pull out all the stops.
In the final match, Hendon 2nds took on UCS and ran out the winners at six tries to one. Their captain, Aidan 'Soppy' Power, was delighted that his players had more than matched their opposition in backing up the ball carrier and understanding how to structure attacks with speed and creativity.
Hendon are looking forward to entertaining Harrow at Copthall next Saturday 24th October, kick off 1500.
Martin Benstead Sad News
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of one of our members from the late sixties and early seventies.
Martin Benstead joined Hendon RFC in 1966 and became a regular member of the 1st XV before he left for Australia in 1973 where he played for the Powerhouse club in Melbourne. Martin also played State Rugby for Victoria.
Martin was a very popular member of both Hendon and Powerhouse. Martin leaves a wife, three daughters and nine grandchildren and will be sadly missed by all his friends at Hendon.
